Air Force Eyeing Recovery of Discoverer II Capsule

Air Force planes at Vandenberg may try to snatch the Discoverer II nose cone from the air as it descends by parachute after launch. Vanguard III failed to reach orbit from Cape Canaveral, and its second stage did not ignite, leaving officials puzzled about the malfunction. If the recovery succeeds, Hawaii based planes will seize the parachute and reel the capsule aboard. otherwise Navy ships would lift it from the sea. The capsule carries life support and environmental instruments for future satellites. Discoverer I completed a 17 day orbit before burning up, with no recovery attempted. The Discoverer II mission marked the second successful orbit in the program.
