Oak Hill Chamber backs Shipe for high school principal

The Oak Hill Chamber of Commerce passed a resolution urging Fayette County Board of Education to consider Frank Shipe as principal at Oak Hill High School. Shipe is a local educator with strong moral qualifications. The group’s school committee, led by Rufus Hurt and others, stressed broad support for the candidate and anticipate presenting the resolution to officials.

Mount Hope Theater Opens Amid Firelit History

The Mount Hope Theater opens today after a 1943 Royal Theater fire and 1947 rebuild. Charles Taylor Jr. is serving prison terms for arson connected to the earlier fires at Mount Hope Armory and a railroad station. Edward Pasley becomes manager, succeeding D H Jones as Oak Hill Theater oversight.

Cab Driver Pleads Guilty to Speeding Charge

Mullens taxi driver Jack Norman pleaded guilty to speeding when arraigned before Justice R. M. Stovall. He was arrested by Mullens State Police after Corinne residents complained about rapid driving through the community. Norman paid a $10 fine plus $4.60 in costs.

Coleman Workman Nuptials Performed

The marriage of Hilda Guarde to Clyde Coleman son of Mr and Mrs Green Coleman of Long Branch was announced by the bride’s mother Mrs Florence Workman of Weavaco. The Rev John Williams officiated at the ceremony held in his home on April 5. Mrs Coleman is a serip clerk at the Carbon Fuel office in Kanawha County. Her husband has an Army discharge after four years service two overseas. He is employed at the Carbon Fuel Company.

Federated League Answers Appeal for Weston Hospital Drive

Mount Hope Federated League members organized a donation drive sending a large box to Weston State Hospital. The appeal sought materials and jewelry for occupational therapy and recreational activities for patients. Mrs. Herbert C. Johnson, president of Capitol District WV Federation of Women's Clubs, issued the appeal.

Mullens Lions Plan Spring Homecoming Dance

Mullens Lions Club organizes a Spring Homecoming dance with C. C. Clark leading arrangements. Clark, named by president Dr W. W Wells, will pick a late June date and hire an orchestra. Four delegates and four alternate delegates were chosen for the Lions Clubs state convention in Bluefield on June 15 and 16.

Mullens Playground Included In Tax Levy

Mullens city council restored the playground as a levy beneficiary after protests over cuts. The new plan adds 1200 for the playground, raises street funds to about 3800, and reduces the fire department allocation to 100.
