A gunman described as 35 to 40 wearing a brown jacket and cap robbed the Tyler County Bank in Middlebourne around 11 30 am and escaped with about 5000. Assistant cashier Janice Ferrell on duty said the robber flashed a pistol and demanded 6000 while the cash drawer held about 5000. Police set up roadblocks as bank officials noted the note and getaway car were not observed.
Cape Canaveral reports an Atlas F model ICBM exploded on the pad during countdown. The blast destroyed the missile and damaged the pad, with no immediate damage estimate available. The incident may push back the military rocket testing schedule due to pad shortages.

West Virginia University will award honorary degrees during Paul A. Miller’s inauguration. Honorees include Archbishop John J. Swint of Wheeling, Morris Harvey College President Leonard Riggleman, and railroad executive Herbert Fitzpatrick. Swint has led the Wheeling diocese since 1922. Riggleman led Morris Harvey since 1931. Fitzpatrick opened a Huntington law practice in 1895.

Cleveland boxer Sheldon, son of a local minister, said he would press on with his fighting career despite his last match causing serious head injuries to Tunney Hunsaker in Beckley West Virginia. Hunsaker remained in critical condition at Bluefield hospital after the Friday night bout. Sheldon, 24, sent a faith filled message to Hunsaker noting he prays for his recovery and wishing God be in his corner.
In a serious condition, the patient showed vital signs over 90 pulse 60 and 20 respirations. His wife Phyllis, who had stayed away from the bedside, learned of improvement upon returning to the hospital and expressed cautious optimism saying she felt he would make it. Her relatives, Roy and Mrs. Bailey, supported her vigil.

A year old East Berlin boy who ran away leaped from a five story roof into a West Berlin fire net. He was unharmed and will be returned to his parents as he was not a political refugee. A second boy stayed on the roof and was helped down by East Berlin police. The jumper was taken to a West Berlin hospital for checks.
