Franklin’s Fire Insurance Co. Legacy in Philadelphia
In Philadelphia on March 25, 1952 Benjamin Franklin and allies formed the first mutual fire insurance company in America. The county now hosts over 2,203 mutual insurers with annual premiums exceeding 1.66 billion dollars. Early policies ran seven years with rates from 15 shillings per £250 for brick homes to 40 shillings for timber. Fire marks and volunteer brigades aided rapid responses, a model Franklin also helped establish.
