United Press International reports worsening forest fire conditions in southern West Virginia after 104 fires, including 9 new ones, were reported Sunday. State Forester Asher Kelly commented on the escalating fire danger and rising activity across the region.
Bis T PES reported daylight firefighting Sunday as about 500 workers remained in forests late Sunday night amid persistent fire danger. Weather outlook offered no immediate rainfall relief. Unconfirmed reports of arson were under investigation in Kanawha Logan Wayne and Mingo counties with Sunday fire counts: Kanawha 17 Fayette 10 Boone 9 Logan 8 Mingo 8 Wayne 7 McDowell 7 Lincoln 5 Raleigh 5 Wyoming 5.
Canadians cast ballots to elect a new national government and judge nuclear arms and relations with the United States. Record turnout was anticipated with 8 million voters by 7 p.m. Weather remained cool and cloudy with rain or snow flurries in parts of the west and Maritimes. In Montreal police guarded polling stations as Liberal leader Lester B. Pearson voted in Ottawa East with his wife, while Prime Ministerial hopefuls pressed campaigns elsewhere.
Bette Davis and Katharine Hepburn as sentimental favorites for best actress at the 35th Academy Awards in Santa Monica. Lawrence of Arabia expected to win best picture. Davis could become the first actress with three Oscars. Hepburn would mark 30 years between awards. Gregory Peck and Jack Lemmon anticipated to duel for best actor. Susan Virginia Painter 102, honored two months earlier as an Honorary Citizen by the State Centennial Commission, died after midnight at her son’s home in Raleigh County. Born in 1860 in Carroll County Virginia she moved to West Virginia at 18 and raised eight children with three surviving. She leaves 32 grandchildren 97 great grandchildren and 44 great great grandchildren. Burial arrangements are pending at Webb and Neal Funeral Home with calling after 5 p.m.
Herbert R. Patton, 54, of Bluefield Virginia, died after a paint spray can exploded while he worked at Armour Co meat packing plant. He was injured Friday and died Sunday at Bluefield Sanitarium after emergency surgery.
A former mental patient, Charles Hansen, 33, shot and killed five people in Mount Vernon New York including his wife Dolores 26 and four year old son Arthur. He wounded two other relatives and surrendered hours later to Rev George M Davis of Trinity Episcopal Church in New Rochelle. Police say Hansen had recently been released from a hospital. He handed two guns to the minister who alerted authorities.
Change of venue granted in the Rush Dean Roark murder case before Raleigh County Criminal Court Judge Harry L. McCreery. Roark, 27, of Shady Spring, faces a June 16, 1962 murder charge in the death of Wilbur Ray Plumley, 25, of Abraham. Jury bias and heavy press coverage cited. no new county or date set. In a prior 1962 term a jury found Roark guilty of voluntary manslaughter and he was sentenced to one to five years in Moundsville Penitentiary. bond petition and appeal actions followed, with a March 9 verdict set aside.
Palm Sunday weekend saw nine killed in bus crashes nationwide and over forty injured. A Greyhound bus near Oroville California skidded off a 100 foot cliff in rain, rising toll to eight with 12 hospitalized. In Wilmington North Carolina nine cadets were hospitalized after a bus crash. one fatality and 30 injuries. A Wapato Washington Sunday school bus crash injured ten. A fire in Mount Pleasant Michigan killed three and damaged a two story structure. Three separate car accidents in Michigan each claimed five lives. another collision near Albion killed five.
Residents queued outside a supposed liquor store only to be offered anti polio vaccines amid a government mix up. In England a man set fire to a car causing explosions and minor damage. A drunk man yielded a surprising stash of cash found in a paper bag. A windy radio broadcast briefly sent a record flying as DJ Marv Ray hosted remote coverage.
WBZE in Wheeling begins broadcasting under general manager John Johns with quality music entertainment and news. Principal stockholders include George Beneke E J Flaccus and George Thieroff. An avalanche swept into a valley near Bolzano killing five workers and critically injuring a sixth. The six men were laboring on a local tunnel in the Cesen Valley about seven miles from Selva dei Molini in northeastern Italy.
A Baltimore Transit Co bus struck a small convertible during morning rush hour, killing four schoolgirls aged 10 to 14 and seriously injuring at least two others. The bus driver, Vernon Baker, 38, of Elkridge, Md, was alone aboard. The accident was described by veteran officers as the worst wreck they had seen.
In Birmingham police and police dogs broke up a Palm Sunday anti segregation prayer march sending 600 Negroes fleeing. Dozens were bitten and 26 arrested after warnings to move were ignored. Martin Luther King Jr said more protests were planned despite the clashes.
Mt Etna lava stream from a crack on the volcano edge menaces Linguaglossa near Catania. Peasants report red-hot flow as clouds briefly break over Europe’s tallest active mountain, raising fears for the pine forest and a town of about 6,500 residents.
A Randolph County white oak with a 135 inch diameter and a hollow base has been named West Virginia’s biggest tree after a nine month search. The giant 11 foot 3 inch thick trunk, 33 foot 10 inch circumference, stands near Huttonsville on Route 219 and was designated by the State Department of Natural Resources with the West Virginia Centennial Commission.
