Roughage Lowers Dairy Farm Costs
A two year study on 34 southern Michigan farms shows feeding more roughage and less grain can cut dairy feeding costs by 20 to 25 percent. Farms with excellent roughage had 46 cents less cost per 100 pounds of milk and $64 more per cow in returns above feed costs. Farmer A had excellent alfalfa-brome-ladine pastures and high roughage intake. Farmer B had poor forage and higher grain use, slowing milk production. The report suggests West Virginia dairymen could profit by growing better roughage.

Fast-Gaining Sires Pay In Beef Cattle Business
Emory Virginia work at VPI Agricultural Experiment Station shows heifers sired by fast gaining bulls gain 332 pounds in 183 days on pasture versus 297 pounds for slow gainers. High gainer bulls averaged 2.54 lb daily gain on feed. low gainers 1.78 lb. Heifers from high gainers slaughtered at a low good grade. slow gainers at top commercial. Research led by K C Williamson and R C Carter plans to run ~30 beef cows and 75 ewes, with sheep work comparing bluegrass to ladino clover for spring lambs.

Poultry Disease Control Vaccination Schedule
Dr E P Johnson of the VPI Agricultural Experiment Station recommends an intranasal Newcastle disease vaccine for all chicks at one to two days old. In congested broiler areas re vaccinate at four to five weeks, and lay stock about a month before laying. If kept a second year a fourth vaccination at six to eight months is advised. Turkeys in disease prevalent areas should be vaccinated similarly. Breeding stock only requires one vaccination one month before production if disease is not prevalent.

Garden hints for seedlings and seeds
A practical note on using a baby syringe as a glue applicator, stopping it with a nail when idle. Petunia seeds should be pressed onto soil without covering, as the smallest seedlings often yield the best flowers.
Dairy Calf Feeding Study Yields Mixed Results
West Virginia University researchers tested three calf groups to compare high concentrates versus high hay feeding. All calves received milk for eight weeks, with growth tracked to 16 weeks. Results show concentrates boost gain but raise feed cost per pound, while hay-heavy diets reduce gain even as hay use increases.

Community Four H Clubs Excel School Sponsored Organizations
Rural sociologists at West Virginia University studied 4-H clubs in West Virginia and found community centered clubs outperform school centered ones in reenrollment membership age camp attendance and project completion. Strong community integration via parental involvement adult councils and public activities correlates with higher performance. School clubs can succeed with equally close community ties.

Thomas Suggests Broccoli as Green Crop for Gardens
County Agent H. B. Thomas urges area gardeners to add broccoli to green crops. Guidance covers early planting in April, soil pH around 6.5, fertilization with 5-10-10, dusting for root maggots, side dressing with nitrate or poultry manure, and pest controls using rotenone or methoxychlor and malathin. Also notes timely grape pruning.

Pruning Guide Says Four Lateral Vine Buds Maximize Grapes
Thomas recommends a rough rule for neglected grapevines. Focus on last year’s wood with lighter color and pencil sized growth. Leave about 40 buds distributed as four laterals of ten buds each near the vine base to minimize nutrient travel and boost quality grapes.
