Patrick Power 33, manager of the Fairmont West Virginia Hotel, was killed in a two car collision on U S 50 near Grafton. A native of Dublin, Ireland, he had worked as assistant to the president of the Penn Harris Hotel and earlier at Pocono Manor Inn. His body will be flown to Ireland for burial.
In Cape Town area troops and police routed hundreds of Negroes who failed to join a native back-to-work movement. An African priest from Nyanga East said two were killed and three wounded. later reports cited four wounded as police opened fire. Demonstrators atop a hill in Nyanga and clashes at Claremont township marked widespread unrest as authorities aimed to crush the boycott and pass controls.
In Galveston Texas two eligible voters, Jesse Mendoza and his wife, both approved a million dollar bond for Drainage District 4. The district plans to drain marshy land and allow up to 300 homes to be built once water is diverted, with ballots sent to Austin for certification.
