More Money For Sealing Mines
The WPA approved a further 16 278 dollar allotment to seal mines in counties, raising the appropriation from 10 000 dollars. Two hundred men are closing abandoned openings to prevent acid formation. Director E S A le said he would add 262 workers, noting the increase follows a joint effort by the U S Public Service and state health department. Logan, Kanawha, Harrison and Preston counties see the largest gains due to heavy acid loads. The department has sealed mines since 1933 largely with federal funds. Tisdale estimates about 30 percent of the 1 000 pounds of acid entering streams is fed by mines.
