Ishroyer Explains Charges in Gas Tax Refund Case

Beckley College business manager D K Shroyer was arrested and freed on bond in a gas tax refund scandal that has led to six other arrests, two state officials, and the suicide of a state employee. Shroyer testified that he endorsed White s vouchers after introducing him at a bank, believing White acted in good faith. He faces larceny and accessory before the fact charges over roughly $10,000 in stolen refunds.

Electric Rate Cut At Hinton For 4330 Customers

The public service commission approved a rate reduction for Virginia Public Service Company serving 4330 customers in Hinton and nearby towns including Lewisburg Ronceverte Alderson White Sulphur Springs and rural areas. The move lowers charges starting May 1 and is estimated to save about 12000 annually. The old domestic plan began at three dollars monthly for the first 40 kilowatt hours and rose to two cents per kWh beyond 300 kWh. The new plan sets a one dollar minimum charge for the first kilowatt hour and charges two cents per kWh for usage over 200 kWh.

Huntington deputy DA files for Democratic governor nomination

Lemuel Richard Via of Huntington filed today his notice of candidacy for the Democratic nomination for governor. Rose Ferguson Burford of Point Pleasant filed for Republican state committee in the Fourth district. W. E. E. Koepler of Bluefield withdrew as a delegate candidate to the Republican national convention from the Fifth district.

Traffic accidents kill two children in Wheeling

In Wheeling on April 3 two children died in traffic incidents. Eight year old William Cecleman darted from behind a parked truck into a passing vehicle, while ten year old Marco Cerebes, rolling a hoop, ran into an oncoming car.

Storm in Soth Takes Forty Lives in Southeast Storm

A devastating tornado tracked from Cordele Georgia to Greensboro North Carolina, killing forty and injuring hundreds. Library Opens To Public In Beckley Annex

London April 3 A German refusal to promise not to fortify the Rhineland even temporarily was delivered to the British foreign office. Anthony Eden announced that Britain France and Belgium were ready to defend if attacked but sought permanent peace proposals with Hitler. Cigarettes Stolen From Prince Street Restaurant
