Allied dispatches describe Ghent Belgium being evacuated as British forces push from Valenciennes toward the Scheldt canal. Two thousand German prisoners are reported taken, with advances near Raismes forest and along the Lys and Meuse fronts as American and French units press forward.
The Wilson administration has submitted Germany's plea for an armistice to the allies and informed Berlin that peace talks must require surrender of military masters to prevent a renewal of hostilities. The president insists any halt must be enforceable by the allied powers, with terms that protect involved peoples and future peace.
American bombing airplanes and aerial machine gunners were active north of Verdun as two bomber squadrons hit Buzancy with good results and about 120 machines attacked enemy troop concentrations near Remonville in the Bois De La Foche and Bois De Barricourt. Fokker opposition was driven off in each instance amid a day of numerous aerial combats. Lieutenant Edward V. Rickenbacker was credited with a victory before breakfast.
Captain Alfred Grant Benton of Texas single handed fought two Fokkers and shot down in flames a German two seater bound for the American lines on observation duty, leaving equal numbers of Germans and planes downed.
American wounded soldiers in a hospital northwest of Verdun refused to leave their wards and enter dugouts during a raid last night. Red Cross nurses Margery Sawyer and Mabel Butler described the patients as calm despite bombs, smoke, and hospital damage from German planes near Rarecourt.
Washington October 24. America has launched its first flat fabricated ship the Agawan of 5000 dead weight tons. The completion announced by Chairman Hurley of the Shipping Board. Submarine Boat Corporation built at Port Newark New Jersey with contracts for 150 duplicates of the Agawan.
British third and fourth armies smashed through German defenses south of Valenciennes gaining over 5000 yards, capturing villages, thousands of prisoners and guns. North of them, the British first army advanced toward Valenciennes and Le Quesnoy. Catillon and Ors fell, bridges over the canal were blown, and heavy fighting continued around L Eveque wood and the Normal forest.
Captured orders from Oct 23 in France reveal Field Marshal Von Hindenburg endorsing peace negotiations and pledging to support the government. The crown prince warns officers to adhere to orders, while a high command note urges maintaining ground and harming the enemy as diplomacy proceeds. All documents came from the fifth Bavarian division.
Washington report reveals 2,008,231 American soldiers to join the war overseas, disclosed in correspondence between Secretary Baker and President Wilson. The White House released the letters Wednesday night along with the President’s reply to the German note.

Amsterdam dispatch reports the Frankfort Gazette warns that even careful western front defense would incur large losses under modern conditions. It argues against a slow defensive retreat from Belgium and says fighting there should not be unnecessarily prolonged. The paper notes populist government momentum since 1818 and that Germany would accept harsh terms only if its armies could not avert submission.
Bruges dispatch reports Belgian soldiers discovering many Russian POWs in liberated territory. Captured three years earlier, the Russians were forced to labor beside German labor companies behind the firing line, brutalized and ignorant of the Russian revolution, Nicholas II's death, or the Brest-Litovsk treaty.
Thomas W. Lawson, Boston financier and independent U S Senate candidate, was injured when his limousine overturned in Marlboro Northboro on Wednesday. His daughter Octatoe W. Lawson and the chauffeur were also hurt. the car skidded while the driver tried to avoid another vehicle and crashed.
