Gen Van Wick of Middletown NY injured in a fall. Alexander Detria a Cuban patriot sentenced to death for treason. E J Galliday nominated for Congress by Liberals in Nashville District. Masonic Grand Lodge Ohio selects Sidney Moore of Delaware as Junior Warden. Several arrested in Pennsylvania for election frauds. Two thousand New Orleans longshoremen strike for four dollars a day disrupting levee business. Colorado River directors withdraw from Bayon ten million bond vote. Congress, morass, white, and J Hinckley shot and wounded yesterday by Samuel Jones, colored, at a sailors boarding house in Philadelphia. Two thirds of the St Louis opening was sold yesterday by W H Barclay for $120. Barclay owned one third. A young man, Jas H Catlin Cleveland, killed by falling from a stair railing in the basement. Mexican Senate vote by Grant reported amid 10,000 to
European news notes the Postal Treaty between France and the United States has been approved by the state departments of both nations reducing Pristate rates by nearly half. An English rail disaster near Chalmsford reports a passenger train off track, cars driven down a steep embankment with unknown casualties. A Brussels confession ties a parish communista to the Traupman murder of a Paris family.
A New Year dispatch reports Attorney General Williams may retire after the election with Gen. Bristow named as possible successor. Williams denies retirement. The Rio Grande frontier disputes are blamed on Mexico. American and Mexican commissions dispute each other over disorders on the Texas border. Weather, benevolent convention, Tammany trials, and a busy New York scene follow with indictments against Tweed and others.
The National Board of Trade discussed Buffalo's proposal for government aid to projects in a state only if the state relinquishes private ownership and right of way. Hazard urged Erie Canal expansion as vital for cheap transport, while Opdyke argued New York should not forfeit its water works. The committee warned against gambling in trade and the Tweed case moved to quash the indictment. Caleb Cushing welcomed the Geneva Award, noting modest money value but clear points settled.
The Missouri Kansas and Texas Railroad party has returned. Dennison Texas reports four hundred houses and a bridge across Red River will be ready for the track November 15. A rush to Texas from the Northern States is unprecedented with 83 car loads of cattle under contract and cotton accumulating near the road.
The Moses State ticket is believed elected in Columbia with Banier Elliott and Kanney winning as colored representatives and B F Perry a Democrat elected to Congress. Pennsylvania Democrats consider no electoral ticket. Massachusetts and New York reports show various nominations for Congress including Dawes and Woodward, with regional party moves and adjournments noted.
In New Orleans on October 17 a group of longshoremen trying to recruit laborers to join a strike were fired upon by J. W. Barnes, the barge contractor. Barnes was killed after being struck on the head by a stake during the confrontation.
Fire at La Grange Kentucky destroyed W A McDonald drug store J I James shoe shop J W Shannon furniture store and homes of Mrs Wm Nay and Mrs Keightly with total loss about 4200 including 400 currency. Frankfort houses of Wm Saffer and Dr Sneed burned. loss 12000 fully insured. Also listed are Richmond ch accident and Lac la Belle sinking casualties and Aculeo wreck off San Francisco.
The St Louis Fair coverage describes a journey from Quincy to St Louis on the Clinton steamer with Capt. Congar and clerks Havlin and Hallett. The narrative notes an enamored Quincy youth and a departure at Hannibal, with city editors Cohen and Van Pelt aboard for the trip.
