A grand Republican mass meeting is planned in Quincy on October 22 with speakers including Gov. B. J. Oglesby and Chas. J. Metzner to energize the western campaign. The notice urges farmers merchants and workers to attend and defend the party against the reactionists.
The Providence of the Fall River Line collided with a wood scow in Hell Gate at 6 pm while trying to avoid a schooner. The scow was crushed, upper works on the Providence were torn off, and the steamer drifted onto rocks. Six hundred passengers faced great excitement but no injuries occurred. The Stonington ferried away most passengers.
St Louis October 16 The ninth annual convention of the Grand International Division of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers met at the Polytechnic Institute. Charles Wilson Grand Chief Engineer delivered the annual address setting forth the condition of the brotherhood. There are one hundred and twenty divisions of the Brotherhood with eight thousand members. The Orphans' fund amounts to 15 899-404, total receipts for the year 19, cash in treasury 13,633.
Mapario reports Ferrol observers say Victoria may reach harbor soon amid preparations for an attack on the insurgents. Municipal leaders urge suspending action while surrender negotiations proceed. commander agrees to wait through the afternoon. Also notes a labor strike at Litzmoor docks and a formal opening of Japan's Yokohama to Yeddo railroad by the Mikado.

No further legacies are named. Property value not yet appraised but likely near $200,000.

Philadelphia Oct 16 John L Martin arrested for embezzling 26000 from Centreville Bank.
In Sacramento on Oct 16 a $10,000 race between Goldsmith Maid and Occident drew about 10,000 spectators. Occident led early in heat one but Maid won by three lengths. Maid also won heats two and three, final times around 2:20. Gov. Stanford owns Occident and expressed public remarks this morning.
