Berne Switzerland Oct 17 1917 German war morale declines amid ongoing misery but no food shortage. Civilians endure hunger, cold and worn railways as factories wear down. Experts across the border say Germany may fight on for another year but will eventually seek peace as morale sags.
Wide day in Mineola New York as the Blanca De Saulles murder trial resumes after Thanksgiving. Attorneys plan to question alienists and medical experts for both sides while Weeks and counsel prepare to summarize. Judge Manning will then instruct jurors before deliberations begin, likely Monday if Saturday court session is held.
In Belleville Illinois on November 30 three white men from East St. Louis were convicted in circuit court on conspiracy charges tied to the East St. Louis race riots of July 2 and fined 500 dollars each. A fourth defendant was acquitted. The verdicts came in after the jury deliberated Wednesday afternoon and Thursday under Judge Oscar Heard who held court on the holiday to receive the decision.
Treva Elmore a grain broker was killed and Albert W Perrin of St Louis and Harry Bulk of Beardstown Ill were injuredThursday night when their automobile skidded struck a telephone pole and overturned in Missouri.
Two American soldiers were killed and five wounded by a heavy German shell that struck a loaded ammunition wagon in France. The wagon and cargo exploded, with some men aboard and others nearby. several wounded men are in serious condition and all are in hospitals.
Washington November 30 An annual saving of 16000000 pounds of sugar and 12000000 pounds of shortening is expected by cracker manufacturers under food administration rules The limits allow in 196 pounds of flour mixture not more than 17 pounds of shortening with up to 10 pounds animal fats in sponge goods and not more than 26 pounds with up to 13 pounds animal fats in sweet goods No sugar for sponge goods and not more than 53 pounds for sweet goods The administration asks firms to stay under these maxima and warns further cuts may follow.
Reports from northern Italy dated November 28 detail a fierce night battle behind Asiago where two Austro Hungarian regiments clashed. Hungarian Czechs and Galician Poles, in different uniforms and dialects, fought hand to hand with bayonets and grenades until disentangled with heavy losses, revealing both sides belonged to the same army.

Paris Nov 30 The inter allied conference opened in the ministry of foreign affairs with 15 nations represented led by M Clemenceau. Delegates split into committees on finances imports transportation armament munitions aviation food and blockade under French presiding ministers. The four nation war council including France Great Britain United States and Italy will meet on military issues on the western front.
New York November 30 three hundred self confessed drunkards signed the pledge at the Salvation Army annual boozers day service in the 14th street barracks. A lone woman received care from a Salvation Army lassie and asked for prayers to stay sober. More than 500 attendees including the old and young heard stories of eleven reclaimed boozers. After the service the converts received a substantial meal and help toward reform.

New York celebrated Thanksgiving with a strong military focus as about 30 000 soldiers sailors and marines were entertained in homes clubs hotels and restaurants. Churches offered prayers for American arms before elaborate dinners and entertainments at venues including Madison Square Garden hosted by the Patriotic Service League where 6000 service members were welcomed. Adolph Lorber offered his Broadway restaurant for 1300 men with daughters helping and waiters waiving tips while staging tours around the city. Mothers and stage stars contributed to events at the Knickerbocker Waldorf and other hotels and private clubs closed bars and barred uniforms from liquor. Cardinal Farley delivered blessings to soldiers and sailors at National Catholic Service club gatherings.
