Springfield Nov 29 Gov Lowden clarifies that his proclamation marking Illinois statehood hundredth year does not declare Dec 3 a legal holiday nor intend a mine shutdown. J E Williams federal fuel administrator had warned that widespread mine closings could worsen fuel shortages during a tense period.
Denver voters elected John B. Lawson president of the Colorado Federation of Labor by about 600 votes in the referendum election that closed last Sunday. Lawson was a well known union leader during the 1913 1914 Colorado coal miners strike.
The official bulletin publishes Thanksgiving notes from Cabinet members including Lane Burleson Lansing Wilson McAdon Baker Daniels and acting secretary of commerce Edwin F. Sweet. They stress gratitude for liberty and democracy amid war and praise national unity, sacrifice, and resilience despite destruction abroad.
On the northern French front fighting around Cambrai continues with heavy German reinforcements and bitter clashes near Bourlon village and Fontaine Notre Dame. East of Ypres artillery is active as Passchendaele and surrounding sectors threaten another large engagement. South near St. Quentin and Verdun small infantry actions favoring French forces. El Paso dispatch reports from Mexico that Villa forces and federal troops clashed Monday between Montezuma and Chihuahua City. General Eduardo Chavez of the Chihuahua City garrison was killed near Laguna in one of the engagements as confirmed reports arrived on Wednesday.
In Peoria Illinois on November 29 patrolman Samuel Moffatt died from wounds after being shot while attempting to arrest ex convict Otto Kurrle linked to a spate of robberies. Kurrle was killed by officer Garretts following Moffatt’s wounding.
London reports that fourteen British merchant ships over 1600 tons and seven under 1600 tons were sunk by mines or submarines last week, an increase from the prior week. Rome states Italian losses for the week ended Nov. 25 include one steamer over 1600 tons, one under, and one small sailing vessel. New York notes no lives lost on the sinking of the Fannie Prescott after a submarine attack in European waters in October. the crew of six was rescued after abandoning the ship and drifting in a small boat.
Gen Maurice told the Associated Press the Italian front crisis passed thanks to Italian army efforts and Anglo French troops are now available. He said Cambrai battle remains volatile but British gains exceeded Haig’s expectations with strong defenses and underground villages described as shell and bomb proof, aiding future operations.

Washington Nov 29 Fuel Administrator Garfield asked for a general priority order to give coal and coke shipments right of way over other freight to ease a nationwide fuel shortage. The plan would assign priority on rail lines to coal, with foodstuffs subordinate to war supplies and include priority for empty coal and cake cars.
Mrs King murder trial in Concord North Carolina hears defense block first efforts to admit motive evidence. Willard Rockefeller testifies Mrs King told him she and her estate were under Means control but planned to free herself soon. Rockefeller and Henry Deitch describe Means and a party guarding her at Willard’s hotel from April to July.
London dispatch reports a mutilated telegram from Petrograd dated Wednesday noting renewed trouble with firing and several wounded. Maximalist troops occupy Petrograd State bank. Reports say people go about business as if no revolution. Also from Amsterdam and Washington, talks of peace with Russia proceed. U S weighs responses to Bolshevik relations and armistice outcomes.
British headquarters reports heavy fighting at Fontaine Notre Dame on the Western Front with German counter attacks and British losses. German prisoners include a battalion commander from the third guards division and forty sixth regiment. In Bourlon village and Fontaine area, tanks supported advances and British troops pushed back German forces but failed to secure full control of Fontaine.
Madison Wis Nov 29 Congressman John M Nelson and his son Byron were indicted by a federal grand jury on a conspiracy to violate registration laws. The son had already been indicted for failure to register. They face trial in December. Nelson allegedly advised his son not to register. Byron Nelson is on his father s ranch in Canada while Nelson remains in Washington.
Berlin accepts Sunday as conference date with Bolsheviki to negotiate armistice across fronts. Bolshevik leaders, wary of Germans, order no fraternizing and vigilance pending talks. Paris hosts inter allied conference to map policy on Russia amid unrest and possible reentry of Russian forces.
Oliver H. Payne, tobacco millionaire and son of ex Senator Henry B. Payne, died June 27 and left an estate reported at more than 32 million. He pledged large bequests to colleges and hospitals including 1 million to Yale University and Lakeside Hospital, 500 thousand to Cornell and Phillips Academy, and 290 thousand to others in Cleveland and at Hickton College and St. Vincent's Hospital.
New York Manhaden district: Louis Enricht, a German inventor, is restrained by a New York Supreme Court order from disposing his substitute for gasoline or releasing information about it. The ruling, signed by Justice Manning in Mineola, bars him from selling or marketing the formula, amid allegations he sought to negotiate with spies and German officials in the United States.
