Soldier Henry Hill Killed in Argonne Remembered in Quincy
Stanley Sterling, a private in Company L, 128th U.S. Infantry, told friends in Quincy of Major Henry R. Hill’s death at the Argonne on October 14, 1918. Sterling described Hill leading a patrol to clear a machine gun nest, the pistol misfiring as German fire mounted, and Hill dying with his men under his command. He praised Hill as fearless, devoted, and beloved by his troops, noting he was buried with full military honors in Epinal, France, and that his actions helped end the war faster.
