Springfield May 10 The Committee on Accounts and Expenditures of the Convention reported and was respectfully laid before the Governor and Legislature. The Schedule committee report was adopted without material change. The election time for the proposed Constitution was not decided. Judiciary reforms were concurred.
Washington May 10 The Committee on Reconstruction discusses the Georgia bill and contemplates a report similar to Virginia's plan with militia instead of regulars for peace and law enforcement. No decision yet, resumption set for Thursday. Nominees Batchelder and Rockwell named. Ways and Means mulls internal revenue bill. Funding bill appears dead.
The vice president presented a memorial from the Grand Army of the Republic seeking authority to send soldiers pensions via mail using the money order system. The Interior Department information was requested on a site invasion of Indian territory. Wilson introduced an army bill, but proceedings ended without action and the Pension Appropriation bill saw a conference committee formed after non-concurring Senate amendments. Lawreree sought to add a bill on women as Assistant Marshals. Kentucky's James H. Lewis was sworn in after replacing Galladay. San Francisco May 10 The Governor has issued a letter declaring the law passed by the last Legislature authorizing San Francisco voters to approve one million dollars in aid to the Southern Pacific Railroad unconstitutional.
Salt Lake May 10 It is reported that A Lyman previously ousted from the Mormon Church pastorship for denying atonement has been made President of the Godites in Salt Lake City The report notes his rise after the disfavor shown by church leadership.
The South Carolina edition notes that Wilmington North Carolina observed Confederate memorial day with business suspended and about 2000 people attending grave decorations. Also mentions a libel suit in Atlanta where Governor Bullock sues the Constitution over a report accusing him of selling the State Railroad to Adams Express Company. A Baptist Convention in Southend reports committee cooperation with Northern Baptists.
The McFarland case closed with the jury returning a not guilty verdict after a 70 minute deliberation. Mrs McFarland Richardson publishes a detailed defense accusing deception in marriage and alleging drunkenness brutality and neglect. She says she and the children received no proper support and she endured hardship before separation.
