State seeks stay as Jefferson City fights rate order

City Attorney Lewis O Conner reported no new word from Jefferson City on how the Missouri Public Service Commission will act regarding a federal court injunction restraining interference with Southwestern Telephone Co. from implementing new rates in Hannibal. The writ, issued by Judge Van Valkenburg in Kansas City, is returnable May 10 for a hearing. The commission likely will contest the injunction since the company obtained the writ by going directly to federal court after the PSC delayed rate increases to about 25 percent set for May 1. The commission had postponed the rate increase six months to allow a hearing prompted by protests from the City of Hannibal, the Chamber of Commerce, and citizens.
