AP reports dawn assault in Mont Didier sector near Cantigny. U.S. troops stormed trenches and machine gun nests after a heavy artillery barrage, taking prisoners as Germans fought to hold positions. Many enemy dead found. one eight-man nest destroyed by trench mortar.
A wartime exports control committee is created by the war and navy departments and the railroad administration to regulate freight to ports for export. It includes Major General Goethals, Rear Admiral Peoples, George D. Ogden, P A J Franklin, and D W Cooke. The panel will select ports, allocate total exports among ports, study essential quantities, and set headquarters in Washington with a meeting planned next week.
Second Lieutenant Bernard F. Harless was critically hurt and Lieutenant Charles Driver seriously wounded when a trench mortar exploded at Fort Sheridan during a test. Harless lost part of a hip and may die. Driver sustained two fractures and possible internal injuries but is expected to recover. An investigation will determine the cause, with early suspicion on faulty material or carelessness. Philadelphia and Lincoln, Nebraska, are associated with the officers.
Ethel bert Callahan a widely known lawyer in Robinson Newfoundland died here Thursday in his 90th year. One daughter survives. The funeral will be held this afternoon.

The American Federation of Labor re elected most officers at its St Paul session and adjourned to meet in Atlantic City next year.
