Eupene Hughes leads the field on opening ballots at the Republican national convention in Chicago on Friday. On the first ballot Hughes had 2531-2 votes, Michigan gave 32 votes instruction for Ford, and Roosevelt and Fairbanks showed growing strength on the second ballot. Roosevelt leads the morning parade with a strong demo and Hughes gains across multiple states as the party eyes a nominee.
Chicago June 10 12 54 AM the last stand of the allies against Hughes forces which threaten to keep the Republican conventions as en ordered with more than a majority of delegates pledged their colors steps were taken at midnight to guard against desertions. Optimistic statements were circulated based on the ability of combination favorite sons to adjourn yesterday's session before proceeding with a third ballot which if taken almost certain would have made Justice Hughes the nominee Allies depend on Teddy. The plans of the combination were guarded with secrecy but it was necessary for leaders to win the confidence of many to learn Sagamore still held the needed reinforcement to win. A word from Colonel Roosevelt seemed to end the chance of a Hughes nomination and his approval would give the candidate strength to go before the convention today with at least a show to get the nomination. Big combination forming leaders were managers of Fairbanks Weeks Burton but hoped to enlist all allied candidacies Sherman Root Cummins Knox and others with scattered followings. The advocates of Fairbanks were strongest because he gained on the second ballot at the Coliseum. Petrograd cites 1,143 officers and over 64,700 men captured. German troops are aiding Austrians as Vienna confirms new Styr positions and Verdun bombardment continues. Greek king demobilizes twelve army classes, a move Paris links to Entente pressure and possibly Athens cabinet changes.
In Oyster Bay on June 10 Col. Roosevelt took personal charge of planning for the Progressive convention via long distance telephone and aides. He monitored Chicago balloting as Hughes lagged on the second ballot, and believed Hughes’ strength peaked then. Roosevelt anticipated adjournment moves and saw his own nomination chances improve.
The Vossische Zeitung of Berlin says Ambassador Gerard disclaims responsibility for an interview published by the Berlin Achtuhr Abendblatt and cited in the Reichstag by Count von Westarp. Gerard told the National Zeitung editor that his U S visit by Jos C Drew was private and declined other questions. The National Zeitung editor reportedly returned a manuscript with attributed utterances, which Gerard allegedly tore up in front of John B Jackson.
Gov Whitman of New York on Friday night claimed Hughes would be nominated today. He said the peace conference would be futile with no prospect of agreement and Justice Hughes would be the Republican standard bearer on the third or fourth ballot. George W Perkins offered cautious remarks.
Aberdeen reports the British cruiser Hampshire, carrying Earl Kitchener to Russia, afire before sinking off the Orkney islands after a night collision with a violent storm. Rescue boats were swamped. about 80 bodies were found along the cliffs as survivors clung to wreckage.

Roosevelt approves delaying nominations until after that ballot result. Oyster Bay reports Roosevelt secured a pledge from Progressives not to nominate until Saturday.
