Felt Thrills of War
Lowry Fage of Effingham Illinois a Gem City Business College student and friend of LD H Clymer relates sighting the German submarine that torpedoed the Lusitania and the horse ship he rode aboard was attacked hours after the sinking. Page and Eugene Ogle left Quincy in April to cross to England to observe the war en route. They worked as caretakers for a British horse cargo, saw a German sub near the Irish coast, and were warned by a British cruiser. They reached Avonmouth May 3, and on returning after a 24 hour layover they received the Lusitania SOS signal and dodged another submarine. Page and Ogle returned home content with the extraordinary experience though urged to enlist while in port.
