London July 7 David Lloyd George is appointed secretary for war. Sir Edward Grey receives an earldom and the Earl of Derby, former director of recruiting, becomes under secretary for war.
Petrograd dispatch via London reports nearly half a million Austrian and German troops incapacitated since Gen Brusiloff's advance began a month ago. Prisoners total about 235,000, including 4,500 officers, with dead and wounded feared around 200,000 to 220,000. Germans fewer prisoners but heavy losses in counterattacks. New Orleans July 7. Loss of at least seventeen lives and millions in property damage from a tropical storm that swept the east gulf coast and moved inland. All deaths occurred near Beloit Alabama where seventeen necros were reported. Mobile and Pensacola reported no deaths. Property losses cited include Mobile around a million, Meridian mate said, with Laurel Mississippi listing two hundred thousand six hundred. Maximum winds reported at 160 miles per hour.
