Trial of five socialist assemblymen drags into second week
In Albany on January 31 1937 the second week of the trial of five suspended socialist assemblymen charged with disloyalty continued. Counsel for the judiciary committee struggled to finish presenting their case as the day covered socialism history since 1861 and the party antiwar program with volumes of documents. Witness Algeron Lee of New York testified on conditional support for general strikes as a political weapon and the possible use of industrial action to back political aims. The committee sought speedier proceedings amid rumors of a bid to re-seat the ousted members led by Lieutenant Colonel Theodore Roosevelt.
