The Davenport Gazette reports Bailey who shot James Laird at Naperville Illinois after a scandal with his wife. Bailey, a Marengo Iowa mechanic, fled Marengo amid rumors of infidelity and killed Laird, the man connected to his wife’s dishonor. Residents call for justice as the tale closes with two villains held in public contempt.
Washington reports urgent Interior funding to aid starving Indians on the Upper Missouri with a proposed $118,000 appropriation. The Senate District of Columbia committee heard a Woman's Rights deputation. Wm J Kenn L N Laidlaw and a clerk in the export bureau of the New York Custom House were arrested by Deputy U S Marshal Nadine on a Tracy supported warrant from Judge Benedict. They are charged with defrauding the Government by fraudulent claims for draw back at the Fifth Auditor s office in Washington. The alleged frauds cover seven months from January to July 1867 and total nearly $60 000.
