The Herald defends Mr Fillmore’s mail transport policy while criticizing a retraction as evasive. The discussion centers on whether the Whig party supported the Captain General’s power to dictate passengers and officers aboard U.S. steamers.

From Cincinnati reports dated December 20 two men Chapen of Filey and Chapen shoe dealers and Wm Kessane of Smith and Kessane pork merchants and a man named Chandler were arrested charged with swindling murder and arson by taking insurance on false bills of lading signed by steamer Martha Washington officers. The boat burned early February on the Mississippi river with about fifteen lives lost. Additional suspects are sought.
