A fire at Fort Snelling five miles above St Paul destroyed the commissary store houses and contents, with a loss of about $50,000. Other items note fraud at New York Custom House with vast amounts invoiced fraudulently, and various political and local incidents across the country.
New York December 22 Congressional Committee questioned many parties about alleged city election frauds. Numerous documents pertinent to the case were placed before the panel. Judge Carter appointed Gratz Nathan referee to obtain compulsory affidavits from Alex S. Diven vice president of the Erie Railroad for Belmont vs Erie Company. a key procedural step in the case.
Washington dispatch reports Gen Grant sending Gen Babcock to Arkansas to investigate state affairs and report back. In St Paul Minnesota on December 21 a major fire at Fort Snelling consumed the commissary house and stores. The magazine was saved with great effort. Losses totaled 850000 with 50000 on the commissary and all guns in the round-house destroyed. Cause cited as a chimney defect.
Memphis Tennessee December 22 Last night at Carroll station two pickpockets attempted to steal from train passengers. Citizens restrained them and the mob hanged them to a tree near the station. The incident underscores vigilante action along the Moiepee line.
