Washington Feb 21 The Supreme Court today sustains the lower court ruling in the Rock Island Bridge Company versus Andrews case. A Senate bill by Mr Trumbull to curb popular violence like the New Albany crime is reported to have Secretary of State approval.
Washington December 21 reports Senate measures including Thayer remonstrance on Osage treaty terms and referrals to Indian Affairs. Sumner resolutions seek federal weights and postal balance updates. Navy Medical Department reform introduced. Pacific Railroad representation added. Interior and Union Pacific reports requested. a Union Pacific completion cost inquiry is proposed.
The Democrat and Times publish figures for Saint Louis buildings erected this year. Eleven hundred fifteen are dwellings and homes, 108 stores, 34 factories, 20 schools and eleven churches. Fireproof store fronts and brick structures dominate. Estimated total cost runs around fifteen million dollars with projected totals over twenty five hundred structures valued between twenty eight and thirty million dollars.
A major blaze in Rochester yesterday destroyed the Democrat leader's bank lock factory and the Union brick building, damaging City Bank and several other structures including stores and offices. Total loss around 100,000, largely insured. Foremen injured by falling ladder fragments.
Charles Hig nan commercial editor of the Chicago Journal died yesterday in Chicago from consumption. He held the post eleven years and won the esteem of many during his residence in the city. His death is sincerely mourned by a large circle of friends.
F E Doye dealer in books and stationery offers new French and German classes at Key Commercial College. Prof Fred W Wood will form two language sections this evening at 110 Maine Street. German sessions three times weekly and French twice, with students invited to hear Goodrich, Bower and Noselman at 7 Commercial College, south side Wi Devissdth.
New Orleans December 21 report that Secretary McCulloch said the Peruvian transport Havana is covered by her flag and should not be seized. Memphis dispatch notes Conway county militia unrest with killings and arson affecting riders and towns. Gen Upham reports insurgents driven from Woodruff with casualties and prisoners taken as refugees claim broader militia outrages.
The main walls of the new Howard University hospital building collapsed during roofing work. About fifteen workmen fell fifty feet to the ground, injuring all, with some serious or fatal injuries. Workmen included both white and black laborers.
In New York on December 21 a clerk in the Treasury Department’s Registrar's office is missing. His accounts show a deficit of several thousand dollars. The counsel for Gunterman Bros. say they will be proven innocent of alleged silk smuggling through the Custom House at the trial.
In New York December 21 Thomas O Acton president of the Board of Police Commissioners announced his intention to resign. Congressional committee on alleged New York election frauds examined District Attorney Courtney and Marshal Murray. Vice President elect Colfax and wife arrived as guests of Elliott C Cowden and will stay until Thursday. Col Wynkoop asked to address the Indian Commission on recent troubles and remedies. New York Central plans freight coordination with Western lines and with Michigan roads as relations with Michigan Southern Central Lake Shore and others deepen.
The Col Carpenter expedition has returned to St. Louis from Fort Wallace. No Indian hostilities are feared north of the Arkansas this winter. Delegations from Miamis Creeks Cherokees and other tribes are expected in Washington to seek additions to treaties on lands cession and tribal welfare. Rumors of a Sheridan defeat are unfounded and no battle has occurred since November 27 when Saetar defeated Black Kettle and allies.
The Court of Queen's Bench refused to grant a new trial to Whalen convicted of the murder of D'Arcy McGee. Chief Justice Beechard and Judge Wilson sustained the Ottawa jury verdict, with Judge Morrison dissenting. Remanded until Thursday to appeal to the Court of Errors and Appeal. The weather in St. Louis remains warm with river ice melted and navigation resumed to points south. Boats depart for Quincy and Keokuk. Illinois River open to Peoria.
