Canton Missouri August 23 1872 a Methodist Episcopal Church South camp meeting started five miles west of Canton. Rev T J Wheat visits the grounds with a Canton correspondent. Grounds at Gee Pattee residence near Mount Morish M Church on elevated ground beside Wyaconds River. A pulpit and 32 by 40 foot front with seats for 2000, torches and lanterns for light, ten lodges including preachers tents, other tents and stables under construction. Several noted divines present or expected including Penn McMaurray Wainright Pogue Primrose. arrivals from up to 25 miles. Attendance growing. final week end expected to see larger crowds. meeting to continue into next week if circumstances permit.

A midnight blaze in Cincranati’s Freeman street lumber yard likely started by an incendiary caused John K. Green & Co. to lose about 12000 dollars in lumber, with J and J M Thompson’s yard suffering around 3000 dollars. Fire brought under control. Separately in New York a warehouse blaze at Charles Zust on Washington street caused losses near 250000 dollars, tied to importer liquors, origin from a kerosene lamp explosion.
