Six hundred acres of timber covered land mainly Hickory Oak Maple Elm Ash and related species. The Bat rane tract near Uney Ferry Landing in Missouri will be offered by private sale and by public auction on an October date, with inquiries at Cottage House between Maine and Hamahr.
A private Rome telegraph reports Right Rev. William Henry Elder, Bishop of Natchez, named Archbishop of Baltimore to succeed Archbishop Spaulding. Elder is a Baltimore native.
City Mexico August 5 No regular nomination for President has yet been made. It is believed that Lerdo De Tejado will be elected. The chiefs are laying down their arms to accept amnesty. The country is becoming pacified.
Col Whitely chief of the Secret Service Division reports in favor of pardoning Collins and seventeen Ku Klux from South Carolina imprisoned at Albany. The cases resemble Collings and Brown is opposed, with others undecided. Weather forecast notes clear weather with northerly and westerly winds across the northeast and Mississippi and Ohio Valleys.
Curriaco August 13 report shows wheat in store totals for August 12 across cities led by Chicago 483000 bushels and Milwaukee 176000 bushels. Other listed amounts include New York 83000, Detroit 142000, Albany 8000, Buffalo 50000, Oswego 20000, St. Louis 52000, Cleveland 15000, Toledo 130000, Philadelphia 22000, Toronto 6000, Montreal 74000, Hamilton 3000. Total 1980000 bushels with half a million in transit.
Great excitement on Staten Island as the Spanish warship Raue Numancia arrives with yellow fever on board. Twenty sailors ill, six deaths on voyage, remaining patients to be moved to lower bay hospitals. Quarantine strict. city hopes the illness will not spread. Other briefs note President Grant's Washington trip and prizefighter arrests involving Ned O’Baldwin and James Mace with plans for a Virginia bout.
Milwauveq Aug. 13 The Chamber of Commerce resolved that it is the duty of the Northwestern Railway to clear itself of the charge that it colludes with the Chicago wheat corner by refusing to provide transportation for grain from Milwaukee to Chicago.
Horace Greeley, writing from Bradford New Hampshire, urges political friends to work hard to win in November predicting victories in New Hampshire Connecticut New York and New Jersey. The dispatch also notes early convention shifts and public declarations for and against Greeley across several states with mentions of Pinchback Republicans and Liberal factions.
Samuel W Cheeselaw of Maine, who ran an ice business in Washington, was fatally shot by Barney Wood, a former local ice merchant. Wood was arrested after a carbine shot at police lieutenant Grasaford missed. the lieutenant was unharmed.

A Northern Kansas storm damages property and crops seem good in Utah. Muskegon Lake mill fire destroys equipment. Goldsmith Maid and Lucy head to California in a private car. Lynn Savings Bank deposits unfoundedly denied. Chicago appoints Elmer Washburn police chief. Fire Marshal Williams to be removed. A flat boat capsizes at Wheeling, drowning Jacob Wilson and others. Annie Watson beats Belle Patterson in a $10,000 trotting match. Naperville restored as county seat after contested vote.

Oglesby plans a speaking tour across Illinois with stops in Pontiac Livingston county El Paso Woodford county Mackinaw Tazewell county Peoria Peoria county Lacon Marahati county Princeton Burosa county and other towns from August 12 to August 16. John H Yeager and Dr Charles Neubert will speak in German at Belleville Nashville Carlyle and Centralia. Generals Beveridge Logan and Moore also schedule talks in Newton Robingan Lawrenceville and other cities. Logan is arranging future appointments as he recovers in Salt Lake for health.
