Thames on Fire Phrase Explained in Reader Letters
In a long reader note a belief is explored that the saying He will never set the Thames on fire derives from an ancient flour grinding mill device called Themse. The piece traces pronunciation shifts from Themse to Thames and asks for help locating a poem with few surviving lines. A separate query seeks the source of Bridget of the Many Curls and a Shropshire Lad excerpt.
