Paris reports Verdun battle continues at high intensity with a Meuse west bombardment and German assaults south of the Forges brook. French lines hold from Lemort Homme Cumieres as pilots shoot down multiple Fokkers inside allied zones.
In Chicago on April 11, the defense for William Lorimer began as witnesses described the Lorimer Lumber property value and its potential profits. Frederick Williams and HH Wheeler testified on timber assets while Radius testified Lorimer did not direct bank loan decisions. most conspiracy counts were overruled.
London April 11 Lloyds reports the Spanish steamer Sintanderino sunk by a torpedo with no crew report available. Lloyds also notes the British steamer Margam Abbey sunk with its crew aboard a steam trawler en route to Falmouth.
Coroner Savage reported Johns Hopkins professor Dr. Harry C. Jones died by poison, self-inflicted in his room Sunday. He endured nervous trouble and felt he had little time to live, with death described as instantaneous.
Floyd Hause aged 56 died after being fatally burned when a ladle of molten metal overturned at the Edgar Thompson plant in Braddock. Eleven others sustained lesser injuries. Hause died several hours after the accident on Monday night.
Lieut. Gen. Sir Percy Lake reports the British assault on Samnayyat near Kut-El-Amara failed to breach Turkish lines. He denies an April 6 attack and notes floods hampered operations as the Tigris river floods hindered progress.

Berlin reports a German note to the American government denying German responsibility for the Sussex attack and for the sinking of the steamers Englishman Manchester Engineer Eagle Point and Berwindgale. The note cites submarine commander accounts and states Sussex was not destroyed by a German torpedo.
Francis A. Becker a Republican state central committeeman was indicted with seven others by the April grand jury on conspiracy and operating a confidence game. Co defendants include Thomas Hennessey Paul Schoop and Tsacore Rosen. Fifteen counts allege fraud and extortion from saloonkeepers women and others. Two counts claim money was obtained by the confidence game.
April 11 information reports Mr. and Mrs. Ben Dudie, held in Minneapolis, will waive extradition and return to Des Moines. Coroner’s information charges them with the alleged murder of their six weeks old daughter Rosa.
Gen Funston reports improved border conditions as the war department considers withdrawing some Texas troops to bolster the lines of communication for the Pershing expedition into Mexico. Infantry will reinforce, cavalry to pursue outlaws, with some units moved toward Mexico to replace diesel and gasoline transport.

Washington April 11 The House naval committee appropriations sub committee began drafting the 1917 naval appropriation bill to fund a five year build program. Most building decisions will wait for full committee review while provisions were debated and tentative agreements reached on several items. The panel will not disclose actions until its report is finished.
London April 11 Premier Asquith replied to Von Bethmann-Hollweg's Reichstag peace speech during a reception for French senators and deputies. He asserted Britain and France seek peace on Allied terms, reject defeat, and oppose military caste rule, urging negotiations between free peoples.
Berlin reports exceptionally heavy French losses in the German advance south of Harcourt where Bavarian and Silesian troops hold the heights of terminten hill. The captured, 2,000 yards wide, lie along the Meuse left bank south of Harcourt and extend height No. 278. The gains strengthen the German line before Verdun. 15 officers and 699 men were captured, including unwounded recruits.
William Barnes former chairman of the Republican state committee issued a statement attacking former President Roosevelt and denying a report that he would oppose Roosevelt's nomination. Barnes argued Roosevelt runs on Americanism and support stems from defense talk.
Ben Crogan his wife and three year old daughter of Galesburg Wisconsin died when their car went off the road into flood waters near the high wagon bridge toward Winona Minnesota. The Mississippi River at this point is slowly falling.
April 11 report states Mora Saiiers were on guard duty in Columbus Monday night more heavily than after the Villa bandit raid a month ago. Soldiers patrolled the streets and military reservation, infantry ordered to sleep in their clothing with arms at their sides and gun racks left unlocked.
Dispatches from the front show Gen Funston anxious over the unknown location of Villa troops near Parral. Col Brown and Col Dodd are believed to be in pursuit, but communications with Pershing’s forces are uncertain and no deadline for stopping is given.
Gen Gabriel, Carranza commander at Juarez, says de facto forces can seize the Villa situation now. He notes Villa’s dwindling numbers and possible swift capture with proper medical care for the wounded, while warning the vast territory makes pursuit hard.
