Washington April 9 Secretary Baker expressed renewed optimism after border dispatches while avoiding details from Gen Funston. Reports say Villa’s forces remain capable though split, with Pershing hopeful but not certain. Funston plans intensified pursuit, awaiting Carranza rail access and possible new base near border for continued chase.
El Paso reports that the pursuit of Francisco Villa has been definitively halted. An American army officer states Pershing cannot maintain supply lines of 800 to 900 miles while pressing Villa, and railways or reinforcements are needed to continue operations. Reports from Juarez and Washington flag heightened tension, with Carranza troops near the border and possible leadership changes in Mexican commands.
Senator Harding defends preparedness as essential to national defense while tying protective policy to foreign engagement. He condemns Wilson era meddling in Mexico, argues for guaranteed protections with overseas business and naval deployments, and stresses Americanism requires shared risk and support.
Washington reports Germany’s assurances on submarine warfare may be disregarded as evidentiary proof accumulates. George J. Dorton, 58, a farmer near New Florence, Mo., died from bullet wounds after a confrontation with Constable Lee Powell and three deputies who were attempting to take possession of property linked to Mrs. J. E. Lowe. Dorton’s son James and Walter Lorton were wounded. Henry Utter, a suspect, was killed. Des Moines Issues Bonds for $300,000 to cover a city hall deficit, with the city’s bonded debt around $1,700,000.
Berlin via London reports the German government states no German submarine or warship caused the Sussex explosion. After April 5, Germany answered the US inquiry and says investigators now conclude all craft involved exonerate Germany. The reply also clears Englishman Manchester Engineer Eagle Point and Berwindvale of blame.
Minneapolis liberals and state Democratic delegation members at the national convention endorsed Frederick B. Lynch for re election as Minnesota national Democratic committeeman.
In Chicago at the Ap pomatox day banquet the Hamilton club hosts Republican leaders including Senator Warren G. Harding Senator L Y Sherman and former Senator E J Burkett. Harding assails 1912 talk and urges unity with a Republican return to power as the party faces disruption and a pledge of faithful leadership. Meanwhile in Minneapolis a log jam breach released a six foot wall of water, prompting rescues of 400 people from Elk River flats after midnight.
PARIS April 9 The sinking of an Austrian transport in the Adriatic sea by a French submarine was officially announced Saturday. No details were given.
April 9 Secretary Baker formally denied any immediate U S withdrawal from Mexico and said American troops were close on Villa’s trail with a fair chance of early success. He backed Gen Pershing’s pursuit noting no orders changed and plans moving forward. Lansing also said no withdrawal intention and that railways remain usable for supplies.
German advances northwest of Verdun push a salient, with two strongpoints taken south of Haucourt and a French position along a mile and a quarter front. Paris notes French gains opposite the salient. Eastern front shows no major actions. Austrians push on the Austro Italian front with several prisoner captures. German subs strike Allied shipping and an Austrian transport is sunk in the Adriatic. Berlin cites submarine activity and a Sussex incident dispute.
New York April 9. The newly elected Republican state committee met to organize and re elected Frederick C. Tanner as chairman. Supporters viewed the move as strengthening the Hughes for president and Whitman re nomination factions, with no presidential candidate named. Tanner signaled opposition to Roosevelt but did not declare a Hughes or Root preference.
At Hereford Garrick theater on Friday night a stage fire killed five child performers and burned many others. Costumes of cotton wool fed the blaze as the curtain fell and escape rights led to a panic with crush injuries but no serious fatalities beyond the children.
Richmond April 9 The executive committee of the Progressive Party of Virginia might endorse Theodore Roosevelt for president Saturday Some members favored amalgamating with the Republican party if Roosevelt is their pick for president
New York reports David R. Francis of St. Louis, newly appointed ambassador to Russia, sailed Saturday with a contingent bound for Copenhagen via steamship Ost Ll. to rendezvous with his mission.
Washington April 9 The final form of the army reorganization bill remains uncertain as a joint conference on the measure looms on April 18. Debate centered on peacetime strength with senators proposing increases from the committee’s 180,600 figure and some urging up to 300,000. House-passed bill sets 140,000, while conference expected to sharply define the outcome. Debate also touched on nitrate plant sites and war department planning amid broader questions of national policy and responsibility.
James Moran alias A G Maggs and three companions confessed to a New York mail truck robbery on Feb 26. The raid yielded about 200600 in four packages of federal reserve notes and jewelry, with Moran saying he was double crossed and wanted to leave. Authorities in San Diego, San Francisco and Los Angeles noted Moran’s surrender and full confession details.
