Halibut Inshore Movement Warns of Declining Banks

It warns that British Columbia halibut banks have deteriorated in recent years and calls for measures to preserve the fishery from exhaustion, citing parallels with European and Atlantic Canadian banks.

Halibut Fisheries in British Columbia Then and Now

The British Columbia halibut fishery yielded finer flesh and smaller averages than Icelandic and North Sea stock. Historic zones between Queen Charlotte Islands and the mainland saw crowded grounds and large fish, with weights once up to 150 pounds though typical catches now range 20 to 60 pounds. Movements align with Dixon entrance and Hecate Strait currents, while steamers and schooners predominated the fishery, mainly run by easterners who once fished from Boston and Gloucester. The season spans mid September to mid March.
