Lauder's Hotel Destroyed by Early Saturday Fire
Lauder's Hotel on Queen Charlotte Street burned to the ground after a fire reported about 11:30 pm Saturday. George Chapman first spotted smoke from the roof as residents raised the alarm. The three storey building, the first erected in the area six years ago, could not be saved though a nearby dwelling owned by D R Young was spared. caretaker William Perry lost all his belongings. Insurance status unknown.

Bears On The Prowl In Skidegate Incident
Three hungry bears entered Skidegate and attacked a dog owner. A bystander named Ed Wiggins fired, hitting one bear as the others fled. Locals question fines for bear shooting without a license and a dog owner’s liability. Some urge exempting Queen Charlotte Islands from gun licence rules.

John Arrived From Prince Rupert and Local Launch Celebrated
The John arrived yesterday morning at 8 from Prince Rupert. A grand dance occurred at the Premier Hotel on Wednesday night. James Werst returned on yesterday's steamer after several months in Seattle. John Sachs launched a new boat on Saturday morning. The launch pleased many locals and the Sachs family received congratulations for adding a fine craft to the growing fleet. The event drew a large crowd and no wine was spilled.
