A poll marks 15 years since the 9 11 attacks and asks about safety. Respondents express varied views with 13 percent more concerned about foreign threats and 16 percent about domestic threats while 38 percent feel the nation is as safe as before. Votes total 32.
Republican incumbent Patsy R. Gresham and Democrat Andrew M. Angel face off in a four year term treasurer election. Early voting starts Oct 1 at the Quay County clerk’s office. The contest is the sole local race on the November ballot.

Sixth annual Fired Up! festival in downtown Tucumcari features a molten aluminum pour by Mesalands CC Fine Arts, Wheels on Fire 100 bike ride from Tucumcari to San Jon and nearby towns, a 4-H rocket booth, and the Prince TocomPrincess Cari Native American contest. Organizers expect turnout near last year’s 2000 plus attendance.
Quay County manager Richard Primrose warns of further DWI Compliance cuts after a first quarter distribution of 9000 instead of 23000. He plans to contact state officials to learn why funds were reduced as the program relies on general funds and reimbursements. The 2016 budget sweep and a projected 2017 shortfall raise chances of more reductions.
