Beetles Target Saltcedar At Tucumcari Lake This Summer
Quay County Extension Center official Jason Lamb reports saltcedar beetles and their larvae are infesting Tucumcari Lake’s saltcedar trees. The invasive, noxious saltcedar is declining as drought and beetle activity kill tops, opening the area for native willows and cottonwoods to recover. Lamb notes 70 percent of lake vegetation is saltcedar and warns full tree death may take years. The beetles likely migrated from Texas and could reach the Canadian River Valley, helping reduce water use and soil disruption caused by the trees.

Two Children Die After Bicycle Collision in Tucumcari
On September 9 1970 a 9 year old boy and a 6 year old girl were struck by a car in a residential area. The driver skidded 48 feet and hurled them 140 feet. They died at Trigg Memorial Hospital. The driver fired at police when questioned and was shot in the chest after failing to drop his weapon. He was later charged with homicide by automobile and assault with a deadly weapon. The Quay County Trap and Skeet Club opened near Cleo Webb with $10 yearly memberships and planned a Del's Restaurant meeting. Odeon Theatre screened Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid starring Paul Newman and Robert Redford. The film won four Academy Awards. The ad copy claimed Not that it matters but most of it is true.

Texas trucker cited after mask refusal at San Jon Port
Christian Lee May of Tyler Texas faced a Tucumcari magistrate court citation for refusing to wear a mask at the San Jon Port of Entry and for disorderly conduct when he threw his license at a port inspector. He received a criminal summons to appear September 30 with failure to appear risking arrest. Public Health Act violations carry a $100 fine and up to six months in jail.
