Tucumcari considers changes to animal control code

Tucumcari city commissioners discussed possible amendments to the animal control code at a Thursday work session. Proposals include higher fines for unneutered pets and requiring licenses for breeders. The plan follows a Feb 1 2023 dog attack that killed resident Stanley Hartt and led to felony charges for two owners.

Odeon Theatre owners honored with Curtain Call Award

Tucumcari Film Festival gave the Curtain Call Award to Robert Lopez and Christy Dominguez, owners since 2013, for preserving the Odeon Theatre a 1936 landmark slated to be sold to a local resident. Dominiguez accepted after being summoned. Lopez absent.

Fifty NM districts sue PED over 180 day rule

More than 50 districts including four in Quay County join a Curry County suit against the New Mexico Public Education Department 180 day instruction rule set to take effect July 1 The suit filed by the New Mexico School Superintendents Association seeks a temporary restraining order and injunction The plaintiffs include Tucumcari interim superintendent Dave Johnson and several district leaders as well as five major districts and charter schools The action argues the rule hinders local control and student growth and seeks to block implementation.

New TPS chief puts students first listening priority

Tucumcari Public Schools appoints Carl Marano as superintendent with a pledge to place students at the center of every decision. In a April 22 board vote he emphasized listening to students, teachers, staff, and parents while also valuing personnel across the district. Marano, 52, comes from Santa Fe Public Schools where he serves as assistant superintendent, and will take the post on July 1 succeeding retiree Aaron McKinney after 18 years.
