Route 66 Suite Inspires SC Composer in Tucumcari

Nolan Stolz an associate professor of music at University of South Carolina Upstate takes a sabbatical to research a Route 66 inspired orchestral suite. He spends nights in Tucumcari visiting landmarks such as Blue Swallow Motel and Tee Pee Curios while mapping eight movements including A D 1926 26 Gas Stations and 66 Ghost Towns. He plans to travel original Route 66 alignments to capture travelers experiences and preserve Tucumcari’s historic buildings for his piece scheduled to include eight movements and a closing The Show Will Go On.

Tucumcari native writes book on city’s history

Semi retired history professor David H Stratton 75 began researching Tucumcari’s history and after twenty years published Tucumcari Tonite a story of Railroads Route 66 and the Waning of a Western Town by University of New Mexico Press It is part history book part memoir drawing on newspapers government records interviews and archival holdings to tell how a western town rose and declined with stories including Jewish residents.
