Neon Spotlight at Tucumcari Museum Sparks Route 66 Pride
Johnnie Meier led a neon lighting workshop at the Tucumcari Historical Museum annex during the museum’s 50th anniversary events. He highlighted preservation of Route 66 neon signs, criticizing losses like the Paradise Motel sign and urging local landmark protections and local government action to relight historic signs. Attendance waned due to heat, with 107 degrees reported the day before.

Fossil Dig Yields Teeth Skulls and a Phytosaur Jaw
Volunteers dig through rock with picks and chisels finding eight or nine fossil teeth on day one and glittering fish scales on day two. The site yields many fossils including skulls mostly of phytosaurs, with a 3 foot plaster-covered phytosaur jaw unearthed and protected before lab removal. End of week total reaches about 30 specimens as volunteers endure heat and on site lab safety routines.
