Groesbeck marks first year as Mesalands president

Mesalands Community College president John Groesbeck marked a year in office after taking over last July 9 from Thomas Newsom. He plans to double full time students in 10 years, boost the college’s profile with lawmakers and funders, and expand its role in wind energy training in Quay County. Groesbeck noted the Legislature visit highlighted Tucumcari’s disconnect from the Rio Grande corridor, but lawmakers were impressed by the college’s assets and potential.

Public weighs options for Conchas Lodge rehab or demolition

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers seeks public input on Conchas Lodge at Conchas Lake. Four options include rehabilitating and reopening all or part of the facility or bulldozing it. The lodge, built in 1942 by the CCC, has been closed since 2005 and sits in marginal condition with asbestos and lead paint concerns. The site is about 30 miles northwest of Tucumcari in San Miguel County off Highway 104.
