Dr. Richard Gritzmacher of Presbyterian Medical Services warns that triple digit temperatures in eastern New Mexico increase dehydration risk for children and the elderly. He notes that urine color and urination frequency are early indicators and urges fluids during activity.
Doctors urge regular fluids for all ages to prevent heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Showers of caution include offering water and electrolyte drinks, scheduling breaks, and avoiding peak heat times. Elderly should drink 1 1/2 to 2 quarts daily, increasing with activity, while children need scheduled rest and fluids every 30 minutes.
City commissioners authorize a 2.4 million Second Street project funded by a 1.782 million NM DOT grant and 500 000 CDBG grant to replace water lines resurface the street and upgrade curbs gutters and sidewalks. Construction could start within a month and finish by year end.
