Tucumcari wrestlers go 3-2 in season opener at Los Lunas

Tucumcari posted a 3-2 record in season opening duals against larger schools at Los Lunas. Forfeits at two weights hurt the Rattlers, with wins over Bernalillo by 20, Rio Grande by 16, and Albuquerque Academy handily, but losses to Kirtland Central by 20 and Albuquerque High by eight. Coach Eddie Encinias praised heart and pinned moments while noting an open 132 pound spot to fill. He singled out Prieto, Martinez, Vargas, Clark, Garcia and White for strong showings. Tucumcari hosts a home meet at 4 p.m. Thursday.

Logan players earn eight-man all state honors

Logan’s Park Strong earned first team as punter, placekicker and outside linebacker with teammate Nick Brown on first team as running back. Second team includes Brown, Wyatt Wright and Ryan Fair. Logan went 6-5, placed third in district, and lost to Tatum in state semifinals amid statewide eight-man selections announced by the NMHSCA.

Tucumcari Girls Rally Past Texico In Close Victory

Tucumcari outscored Texico 5-0 late in the fourth to clinch a 37-35 win as Jasmine Jones led with 19 points and Ashley Shipley contributed on defense and steals. Mescalero Apache handed Tucumcari a 67-48 loss in the Lady Lion Classic final, with Jones scoring 19 and Shipley 6.

Tax board plans funding shift for Tucumcari events

Tucumcari Ledgers Tax Advisory Board vice president Al Patel proposed reallocating motel tax funds to boost promotions and start a Tucumcari Visitors Center on Route 66. The plan, debated through January and February, would allocate $154000 extra for promotions, fund a social media coordinator, more billboards, a big new event, and early phase for a Route 66 museum center.

Logan Girls beat Clayton in Dora Tournament opener

Kyndall Ragland scored 12 as the Lady Longhorns edged Clayton 39 36 in the first round. Hines added 11 for Logan while Strand cited slow starts and volleyball conflicts as factors in the late start.

Tucumcari graduate Bill Maddox dies at 81

Bill Maddox, Tucumcari High School 1956 graduate and longtime Lubbock TV anchor, died December 3 at 81. He started broadcasting as a teen at KTNM radio, later helmed KLBK and then KSEL now KAMC. He retired May 2013 after a storied career and wrote The Other Side of the Camera.
