Pipeline petitions rise as ENMWUA seeks land access in Quay County

The Eastern New Mexico Water Utility Authority has filed 17 petitions against landowners in Quay County to access properties and inspect land prior to possible condemnation for a 120 mile water pipeline from Ute Lake. Attorney Kameron Barnett notes many landowners are willing to grant access, and some cases involve unsettled estates or missing mailing addresses.

Mesalands breaks ground on 1.2 million remodel

Mesalands Community College held a ceremonial groundbreaking for a 1.2 million remodel of its Academic and Student Success Center on Thursday. About 60 people attended in Building A as officials from Mesalands City of Tucumcari and Parkhill Smith and Cooper led the photo op with gold shovels. The project is part of a 10 year master plan to revamp campus entryways add new residence halls a black box theater and a 9 acre solar farm with a target completion in 2032 and a projected cost near 20 million. President Gregg Busch called the renovation a turning point noting the college ranks seventh nationally in affordability and first in the state for graduation rates and retention. Mayor Ruth Ann Litchfield called Mesalands a major community asset.

Tucumcari TPS Board Passes on Phone Policy Debate

Tucumcari Public School board declined to adopt a district wide cellphone rule after hearing principals detail different campus policies. Elementary pupils keep phones in lockers, middle school moved to lenient rules then tightened, and high school lets teachers set their own standards. A police seminar on social media prompted students to think before sending.

Quay County Sees Sharp Fall in COVID-19 Cases

New Mexico health data show Quay County tallied 15 new cases last week, down from 67 the week prior, with total cases reaching 2 307 and deaths at 67. COVID Act Now raised the county from high to medium risk as neighboring counties remained low or medium.
