A blaze blocks the only exit through a hayloft window forcing retreat into a corner where a body is found engulfed in flames. Fire crews battle the blaze as investigators document the scene and determine a cause.

Archer Post G A R has discontinued all regular meetings due to heat and local custom until Friday September 9. Special funeral or other occasions may be called at any time by post commander R M Morton.
Mr and Mrs Alonzo Hobson welcome daughter Evelyn at 5:00 this morning at the hospital. Mrs Dan Shine, recently operated on at Methodist hospital, returns home on East Water Street today. Thelma Hoffman of Winslow, injured in a city automobile crash, shows slow improvement. Mrs Cora Tichenor, post operative, is home today. Alex Downey, admitted Friday, shows improvement today.

Mrs Mary Ann Cooper age 87 died suddenly Saturday night at 10 30 at the home of her daughter Mrs George Simmonds near Ft Branch due to complications of diseases. Funeral was Monday at 10 from the Simmonds home conducted by Rev Williams. burial Walnut Hall cemetery. Survived by three daughters Mrs Alice Ayers Newbern Tenn Mrs George Simmonds St Branch and Mrs A Rethian city plus one sister Mrs Malinda Weede Ft Branch She was born in the county daughter of Mr and Mrs Charles Key and widow of William Cooper a pioneer near Ft Branch. She was long a member of the Ft Branch Methodist Church.
Indianapolis Livestock receipts reach 11,000 with steady to $10 lower. Best heavyweights rise to 8.75 8.80, common to choice lights 8.85 8.90, medium to mixed 8.85 9. Bulk sales around 8.75.
Receipts shown for cattle and hogs with mixed bids and top prices. Beef steers and cows varied with steady to lower bids, hogs strong with high sale values and packers bidding upper ranges. Grains and hay prices listed, lambs and ewes noted with wide ranges.
Oma Capehart 35 wife of George Capehart died Monday of pneumonia at her parents Morrison home. Survived by husband, parents, a daughter Edifa, and six siblings Roy Walter Dave Morrison Hight Point Mont Mrs Ernest Harris Vincennes Gertrude and Rachel Morrison. Funeral at Morrison home Wednesday at noon, body later moved to Wart Cemetery near Vicksburg Hills in Knox county.
Contributions toward the Fourth of July celebration announced Monday bring the total to $473.50. The list includes donors such as Harien L. Kays, R. C. Baltzell, Theodore Miller, Maxwell Co, Ford Lumber Co, Busy Bee Restaurant, Moore Milling Co, G. W. Gladish, and many others. Total contributions to date are shown as 473.50 with numerous entries of five dollar gifts and smaller amounts from local individuals and businesses.
Mrs Evangeline Henderson age 65 widow of C Y Henderson died from cancer at her home days after her brother’s death. Funeral services were held Monday and the body was taken to her former home in Ohio for interment.
Mrs R B Mangrum and Potts arrived Monday afternoon to Spend Kansas. They are visiting with Mrs Mangrum's mother Mrs Allert in South Seminary.
The Consolidated Oil and Development Company acquired the St Bonnette acreage in Patoka township and prepared a Sullivan lease location to spill wells today or Wednesday. The Hollingsworth well, drilled by an Evansville syndicate, was plugged Tuesday with a second location planned 90 to 190 feet from the hole. The Landers farm well east of town was plugged at 1961 feet after the Consolidated drilled for Princeton Petroleum. W W Rogers reports a jar of sand from McDaniels No.5 which yielded 195 barrels in its first 24 hours.
J O Sickles of Princeton secured the general contract for the Ft Branch schoolhouse. The Sanitary Engineering Company of Anderson won the heating and plumbing bid. Total cost $106,770. Work to begin in about a month on Hopkins property former office and residence site.
At a Rotary Club meeting chaired by Ed Robinson the first initiation of a Baby Rotarian was conducted for Marion Higgins after a medical examination by Dr Ziliak. Speakers included Fred Luecking Herman Vollmer Rollin Maxath Clyde Noble and President Fisher. Ralph Woods led the march. Garwood Riggs and Mrs Sam Red spoke at lunch.
A Chicago detective with over 25 years on the force spoke at the Chautauqua program about crime causes and prevention. He displayed a sawed off shotgun and a glass dagger to illustrate crook devices and urged mothers to provide wholesome home entertainment to ward off juvenile crime.
