There was little satisfaction about higher pay when it bought less, but now money buys more at least here. We fought for lower prices and will keep fighting to keep them. We want to sell goods at lower prices and advise taking advantage now with items like pure rubber swimming caps at 19¢ and slip-on all wool sweaters at 4.95 each.
Senator Warren G. Harding stated the Republican party would gladly accept President Wilsons challenge for a referendum on the League of Nations. He referred to Wilsons interview in the New York World and said the party would welcome a vote on the nations foreign relationship.
In Indianapolis on June 18 federal court sentenced Evansville police chief Edgar Schmitt to two years in Atlanta prison and a $2,000 fine in the large whiskey ring conspiracy. Fred Ossenberg, Evansville political boss, drew one year and one day in prison plus a $1,000 fine. Overall, 67 defendants faced sentences. five were convicted yesterday and two sought new trials.
Vesper and Rachael Morrow returned home this morning from Frankfort Indiana where they attended the wedding of Lester Morrow to Ruth Noble.
Armstrong of Owensville traveled to the city today on business.
Samuel Gompers veteran labor leader was re elected president of the American Federation of Labor at the Montreal convention with near unanimous support. One vote opposed by James Duncan of Seattle. The election followed a secret executive council meeting to decide on Gompers run for another term.
The chautauqua season includes a morning program for children led by an experienced welfare worker. Fathers and mothers in Princeton are urged to send their children, who will be entertained as well as taught. On the seventh afternoon the annual children's pageant "The Good Fairy Thrift" will feature many youngsters.
J. J Gilchrist, an official of the Standard Sugar Company in Pittsburgh, was fined $10,000 for profiteering in sugar. The amount was the largest ever assessed here for alleged profiteering.
Fifteen hundred army cots and 1 509 blankets will be shipped from Fort Benjamin Harrison to Vincennes by motor truck Friday for the Indiana American Legion state convention June 28 and 29. The state legion has posted a $16 000 bond to insure the safe return of the property. The region secured the gear through a House resolution by Rep Oscar Bland of the Second District that passed Congress.
Mrs. Erma W. Higgins of Newcastle Indiana acts as pension attorney regarding a new law for veterans of the Spanish American War and the Philippine Insurrection. The notice urges affected individuals to seek guidance and file claims promptly.
Tomorrow Saturday marks the final day of the Gibson circuit court's May term. The court will not reconvene until the September term.
The Gibson County Board of Review will hear complaints on the assessment of personal and additional improvements of Johnson and Union Townships Monday, June 21, 1920. By order of the Board of Review Silas BE Morris president James H Armstrong secretary. Also mentions visiting Felker families and Frank Keimer and family in South Seminary Street.
In French Lick Indiana Thomas Taggart Democratic senator says Woodrow Wilson will not seek the nomination and questions why. In New York Wilson tells the New York World he is sure the San Francisco Democratic convention will back making the League of Nations a campaign issue and urges a referendum to decide the issue against Republican evasions. He criticizes the Chicago platform as Prussian in influence and calls for clear Democratic positions on the League.
Washington June 18 Herbert Hoover announced he would support Senator Warren G Harding and urged all Republican factions to unite behind the presidential ticket after dining with Harding. He said he would not seek a third party and reiterated Harding’s pledge to refrain from policy statements until after the Democratic convention.
George Maddox of Evansville admitted warning D. F. Stanley to stay away from his wife. He said he found Mrs. Maddox with Stanley at Stanley’s home and shot him. Maddox, claiming an impulse, planned to divorce his wife, and was to be jailed in Dixon until the July grand jury.
The Southside baseball team seeks information about the Ohio Bloomer girls booked to play here Saturday afternoon. No word has come from the Bloomer girls since the booking and the Southside team will play as scheduled if they arrive.
Workmen began a substantial board fence around the Rixposition Memorial auditorium in San Francisco to prevent forced entry as the Democratic national convention opens on June 28. California delegates, hosting visitors, will likely cast initial ballots for each nominee.
Mrs Floyd J Biggs hosts a 5 pm dinner at West Broadway home honoring Miss Whipple of New York. Mrs Leslie K Thomas entertained twenty five girlfriends at West State street for Miss Whipple guest of Miss Clotilde Embree with five hundred, prize won by Miss Clara Stewart. Mrs Roy Heilman of Evansville attended as out of town guest. Rebekah Lodge hosted a miscellaneous shower for Miss Esther Lindsey at Mrs Charles Binkley on North Race street. About twenty friends surprised Miss Lill Morris with games and music at Railroad street, gifts given, refreshments served, guests left late wishing her future birthdays.
Indications point to a lengthy Indiana Legislature special session as members arrive in Indianapolis to prepare for measures to be considered. The governor is expected to issue the call next week with a hoped convening around Monday.
Stamford Conn June 18 George W Perkins retired financier long linked with J Pierpont Morgan died early today at Stamford Hall sanatorium after a reported nervous breakdown. A close friend of Theodore Roosevelt born Chicago January 31 1862 he rose from a common school education to prominence in finance and public affairs. He was 58 at death and missed the Chicago Republican convention due to illness. Mrs Fred Riggs and Mrs W D Zimmerman are noted as visitors in separate listings.
A short funeral service for Mrs. Julia A. Twomey was held this afternoon at the home of her sister Mrs. Emma B. Stewart on North Race Street, conducted by Rev. C. E. Flynn. The remains were to be interred in Louisville. Daughters Mrs. May Hall and son Frank, both of Louisville, Ky., were in charge. Elizabeth Hadding and Miss Pearl Skelton attended the funeral of John Hale in Patoka this afternoon.
