Newsprint notes Allied forces break German lines on the Western Front while the Russian Army takes an aggressive stance. Reports detail British and French offensives, and London dispatches claim heavy enemy losses as advances continue. Arrivals by train note the first snow on mountain routes.
London reports on the western front where Allied forces advance with British troops holding Givenchy and French re occupying Lille. Two day Anglo French captures reach 20 000 German soldiers 33 cannon and many machine guns with German losses around 60 000 as Belgian hospitals fill with wounded.
Paris reports that British warships bombarded German positions on the Belgian coast in fog for four hours causing great damage and fires. A joint aerial attack was also carried out successfully.
Final arrangements set for a $500,000,000 Anglo French loan at five percent on government notes. The loan may be converted at maturity into twenty year bonds at the holder’s option.
Paris reports a French official statement confirming no change north of Arras and ongoing fighting in Champagne. The German Argonne offensive was checked with heavy losses, while French attacks in Champagne east and north of Rheims broke German positions three miles deep along a fifteen mile front and captured 12 000 Germans.
London Sept 27 An order requires every male Turk Austrian and German in London under 55 not exempt from military service to surrender for internment.
Despatch from Petrograd reports violent fighting around Dvinsk with Russians gaining ground. Cavalry reportedly helped encircle and defeat a strong enemy column near Lake Tobighby, taking booty and surrounding three infantry companies. The piece notes Austrian retreat and river Styr supply drops during retreat.
English financier Charles Perkins in Canada says Japan aids Russia by sending artillery, supplies, and weapons guidance as Russia gears up with five government munition factories. He notes Japan’s hidden but significant participation in the European war.
The Bucharest cabinet met today and discussed mobilization of Bulgaria and Greece. Rumania decided to continue the present course it has been following.
Professor Simpson of Edinburgh writes that Germany has made more than one effort to make peace with Russia in recent months, noting continued negotiations and signaling shifts in European diplomacy. The observation stems from his recent visit to Russia and remarks published for the Chronicle.
