The local team defeated Hazelton 1 0 with a disputed homer by Retchford after an umpire call. Despatches report Bulgaria moving troops toward the Serbian frontier and Greek military law being discussed amid broader WWI era headlines.
Navigation on the Yukon River should end for the year around October 20 with the White Pass and Yukon Route last steamer from Dawson to Whitehorse due to freeze up. Tourist traffic to the north this year is heavier than any prior year.
London reports the Lutsk engagement a great Russian success with 4000 prisoners taken and Lutsk recaptured. Reuters Petrograd correspondent notes the gains as officials prepare to travel to the east on G T P lines. Dalrymple and McNicholl return from the south this morning.
Last evening about fifty recruits arrived in the city for southern regiments to be formed for active service. Lieut. Cooke from Prince George brought a second draft destined for the 67th Battalion mobilizing in Victoria. A large party from Hazelton joined Major James Macdonell to recruit pioneers. The Hazelton Baseball team greeted them with a banner and parade in automobiles. D. D. Munro of Terrace also arrived on the night train.
Official report notes continued hostile artillery on the front with mining and some bombardments but no major results. It cites a successful Allied raid on enemy communications near Valenciennes hitting a railway train and cutting the line in several places.
The Ga letto del Popolo reports a Petrograd despatch saying Emperor Nicholas granted amnesty to more than 100,000 political prisoners. Thanksgiving Day will be observed on October 11 this year.
The Northern B. C. Fair in Prince Rupert ends its season with gate receipts of 930.75 dollars, near last year’s total. President Alex Prudhomme and Secretary Wright receive praise for guiding the event, and proceeds benefit the Red Cross. Indian exhibits, bands, and a grand auction and dance marked the finale, with many prizes awarded for flowers vegetables and agricultural displays.

Eight cars of fresh halibut are to be sent east today to move the catch from yesterday’s Fleet arrival. Boats arriving included Zebassa 35000 pounds La Paloma 4000 Eagle 16000 Jennie Decker 35000 Tom and Al 50000 Constitution 60000. Local buyers include Mr Roberts San Juan Company and Mrs W Adams among others.
