President Wilson states the United States will stay at peace but use moral suasion to show Germany the injustice of sinking undefended steamers without warning. The address frames U.S. stance amid rising tensions in May.
Russian troops dislodged Turks who left munition depots in retreat. Austrians transferred from Prince George to detention camps. 154 prisoners, mostly railway workers, moved under Inspector Owen. Prince George expected to detain aliens under militia oversight. The Borealis arrived with 45,000 pounds of halibut. Captain Johnson reported favorable fishing conditions. J R Séurat departed Prince George for the south.
The Progress, with agent Mr. Poole of this city, delivered 66 000 pounds of halibut. The catch was handed to the Canadian Fish Gold Storage Company and Poole expects the Progress to land there regularly, signaling ongoing trade.
Paris May 10 The Italian government waits for Austria’s final report. If the reply does not arrive by midnight or is unfavorable Italy will end negotiations. A council message announced city solicitor Fred Peters and clerk A C Woods would return by Wednesday’s steamer.
The coroner's jury in London convicts Germany and Kaiser in the Lusitania sinking, calling it wholesale murder and an appalling crime against international law. Reports from Berlin, Victoria, Washington, and Liverpool note German riots, official regret, and protective measures for Ambassador von Bernstorff.
The port saw several small fishing vessels arrive after a 65 000 pound landing by the Progress. Five smaller craft the North Pole the Roald Amundsen the Venus the Ranier and the Olga brought about 10 000 pounds each. The fishing trade now trends toward this port and more fleet landings are expected as the season advances.
The City Council decided to bill for electric light used at the former Premier Hotel, now a barracks. The light superintendent recommended formal payment of the amount due, concluding the accounting for free lighting.
At the council meeting the acting mayor reported a long communication from the Board of Trade on the city market. W P Lynch explained he prepared a report due to outside complaints on market conduct. He suggested the city might lower fish prices by supplying a boat and gear. Alderman Nico moved to refer the report to Page Four.
Vancouver Spokane opened in Victoria with Seattle losing 5 to 4. Aberdeen defeated Tacoma 12 to 3. In National League Chicago won 7 to 0 over Pittsburg, Brooklyn beat New York 5 to 1, Boston routed American 14 to 1, while New York edged Boston 1 to 1.
R EB Ward a dining car conductor on the G TY P received a message from headquarters yesterday informing him that his brother Albert Edward Ward has been killed in action in the Eighth Battalion. Ward had earlier learned a brother wounded in the face had recovered and rejoined his regiment. The notice from the Adjutant General confirms the death of Albert Edward Ward, age 24, with no further details.
