Petrograd reports indicate heavy fighting on multiple fronts. German efforts at Hill 60 include gas use as Russian forces claim gains near Rosseny and counterattacks reclaim trenches around Mount Makovka with 1200 prisoners taken.
The school board decided to start a manual training department after the summer. A teacher will be needed and a room set aside. Boys will have a half day weekly, with training aiding other studies. The board will consult the Provincial Superintendent and Inspector Gower before proceeding.
Official dispatches report fighting at Hill 60 with German forces gaining a foothold under gas cover. A feeble assault followed heavy gas use east of Ypres, but the attackers were repulsed by Allied artillery with heavy enemy losses.
The Gosse Millard Packing Company completed the purchase of the East Bella Bella salmon cannery at Bella Bella about 300 miles west of this city. Capt. R. E. Gosse, president, left for Bella Bella on the Venture with a group of workers and families. The World notes strong development prospects and a satisfactory salmon supply for the season.
The Prince Rupert Baseball League announces officers led by Honorary President Mayor Newton and President S A Corley. Vice President Fréd Stork and Secretary-Treasurer W D Vance serve as officers with Jas McAlleenan as team manager. Teams include the Colts the Terminals and the Catholic Club. Season opens around May 15 with a planned match schedule.
F. W. Hart returns to the city after a pleasant stay in California. He attended the exposition in San Francisco during his absence.
The remains of D. Z. McLennan were held yesterday at the Hay-Inez chapel with Masons of the city in attendance. The mother requested the body be sent to Milverton Ontario for interment, and the request will be honored.
Yesterday in the Northwestern League Vancouver beat Spokane 2 to 1 and Victoria defeated Tacoma 4 to 3 in twelve innings while Seattle triumphed over Aberdeen 9 to 0. Coast League results include Oakland 1 Salt Lake 3 and San Francisco 4 Los Angeles 6. City seeks Municipal Market Manager applicants, by May 10, 1915, bond required, Ernest A. Woods, City Clerk.
Paris reports heavy engagements along the western front with French gains near Lizerne and Hatsas and a failed German attack west of Perthes. Allied forces claim progress with counter actions near Ailly wood and efforts to retake ridges amid German losses. An electric appliance ad follows.
In April 750,200 pounds of halibut were landed and valued at 37,510 dollars amid weather delays. Total fish catch reached 42,225 pounds worth 42,225 dollars, including 65,000 pounds of salmon and 12,000 pounds of crabs.
