French Troops Advance on Fighting Line in Belgium and France

Oil Burning Locomotive Enters Service on GTP Line

The GTP has put an oil burning locomotive into service at the western end of the line. A Sunday night passenger train from Smithers in was the first to use the engine, and it operated excellently. The service reduced delays caused by interchanging east of Fort George and helped the heavy train make up time despite its weight.

Turks Defeated With Heavy Losses by Russian Forces

Report from Petrograd says in Khori Dalman near the Caucasus after two days of fighting Russian troops launched a determined offensive and completely defeated the Turks. Turkish losses are estimated as very heavy with more than 3 500 dead found on the battlefield. The Turkish hospital and its staff were captured at Dalman. The pursuit of the defeated Turks continues.

Death on Survey Vessel Alters Prince Rupert Call

The U S government vessel Kings and Winge halted at Prince Rupert after a crewman, Albert Marnette, died aboard en route from Seattle to Ketchikan. Immigration surgeon Dr McNeill found life extinct, and the body was to be landed in Alaska to avoid local legal complications. The two masted schooner with auxiliary power, commanded by Capt Mornas, continued to Alaska.

Massett Meeting Highlights Conservative Candidate Speech

A large, enthusiastic Massett audience heard Conservative candidate William Manson and J C Merryfield address about local issues. Chair Charles Harrison opened with a review of prior meetings and discussed road projects, bridge plans, and employment, with Manson explaining government work for the district.

Double Steamer Service Starts This Week

The G T P schedules immediate double steamer service with three round trips weekly to and from this port until month end. The Prince Rupert continues arrivals on Wednesdays and Saturdays with departures south on Mondays and Fridays. The Prince George joins the service as second day arrivals.

The McBride Journal notes major changes since spring 1914 as the Grand Trunk Railway town in British Columbia evolves from a jumble settlement to a populated, well laid out townsite. A new garden park near the depot fronts business blocks and a hotel, moving picture theatre, three general stores, a department store, a fur shop, a post office, and hardware outlets fill the area.

Halibut Cargoes Arrive from Borealis and Kryra Boats

The Borealis of Atlin Fisheries returned with about 26 000 pounds of halibut from the banks. The Kryra, a United States independent boat, delivered 10 000 pounds to Cold Storage.
