London July 10 The naval correspondent of the Evening Standard identifies the German battleship sunk in the Baltic by the British submarine as the Pommern.
George L. Clayton writes to Prince Rupert officials proposing a plan to build a wharf and cold storage to bolster independent fishermen. He argues to divert Seattle's halibut trade by enabling local fishing vessels to store and distribute fish, creating a home port advantage for Prince Rupert. A Vancouver population drop and a church strawberry supper are also noted in the text.
Capt. Robert Buscombe of the Seventh Battalion was killed during last rites at a front burial. The chaplain, Lieut. Winch, Lieut. Leeson, and Capt. Buscombe stood over hastily dug graves when a sniper's bullet struck him, ending his life instantly. He was buried with full military honors.
Washington officials view Germany note as a rebuff to U S demands after Lusitania sinking. Secretary Lansing defers comment while awaiting full official text as President Wilson plans cabinet review and possible action. Washington papers call the note impudent and unsatisfactory and anticipate severance of relations if violations continue. The Morning Journal reports 36 cents monthly.
Applicants for the Market Clerk position on salary must meet the Committee at 11 am Saturday July 10 1915 in City Hall. Those who applied on commission papers and can furnish the required bond should be present also. Ernest A. Woods City Clerk.
Thomas Chalmers, agent of the G T P, leaves about August 5 for England to take a position in the transportation arm of the military department. He expects work in troop movements from Britain and has brothers in the army. Pretoria reports surrender terms transferring all German Southwest Africa government property and war material to the Union of South Africa.
Spokane defeated Vancouver 7 to 6 in ten innings. Tacoma beat Aberdeen 4 to 3. Seattle topped Victoria 8 to 4. Cincinnati and New York posted 7 to 0 scores. Chicago won 3 to 0. Brooklyn 8 to 4. Mussallon & Company advertises grocery prices at 423 Fifth Avenue with phone contact 128.
Dr. G Sterling Ryerson, president of the Canadian Red Cross Society and Surgeon General, reports excellent condition and spirit among Canadian and Allied troops along the Aisne and Marne. He predicts a tremendous western front drive within two months and believes Germany will be defeated with the war ending within a year.
The Majestic Stork Company plans a Monday departure for Alas kan points ending at Daweon and Fairbanks after a week at the Westholme Theatre. The troupe performed The Price and left with a note of goodwill. Furnished rooms above the office are offered at low rent by Westenhaver Bros.
